Palo Alto VA seeks bone health study participants
The Palo Alto VA is conducting a research study on bone health after spinal cord injury. The study will look at the forces produced during activities designed to exercise your legs.
You will receive an assessment of bone health in your legs. The study involves using Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) to perform FES-cycling, FES-rowing, and quadriceps stimulation while standing in a standing frame. The goal is to understand how much force is generated in the legs during each activity, with the overarching goal of using the results to help researchers and clinicians determine whether certain FES-assisted exercises could have the potential to prevent or reverse bone loss in the legs after SCI.
It is not required for participants be veterans. Your participation is expected to last less than 4 months. Participants must be:
- 18 years or older
- Spinal cord injury (T1-T12)
- Motor complete (no voluntary leg movement)
- More than 9 months post-injury
If you're interested in participating, contact Becky Lambach at (650) 493-5000, ext. 69411.
