The purpose of the Newly Injured Grant is to help enhance the lives of those individuals with a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) who are within two years from their injury date. The grant focuses on those who have received minimal amounts of physical therapy following discharge from their in-patient rehab, and we prioritize recipients who don't have the financial resources to pursue their goals. The program is 4 months long.
HOW WOULD YOU BENEFIT FROM THIS PROGRAM?
Our program has three components to better support individuals who are newly injured with an SCI/D. Here’s what each person will be offered upon being enrolled in the program
INTENSIVE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES
Our goal for this component of the program is to enable participants to establish a better understanding of how to apply a high amount of physical fitness and training to improve strength, flexibility, and function.
1. Participate at an appropriate accessible exercise and fitness therapy gym for 3-4 months, paid for by NorCal SCI.
2. Access to a twice-weekly virtual fitness and aerobics training class already provided through NorCal SCI to our community for four months.
EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION
Access to our video library that covers the following topics that can be helpful for the recovery journey:
Your Body post SCI
Nutrition
Fitness & Health
Electrical Stimulation
PEER SUPPORT
Engaging with someone who has already been through their own SCI recovery can be of real benefit especially to the newly injured. We will offer to pair each grant recipient with a Peer Mentor to help support them throughout the 4-month program. We have a large team of mentors with a variety of injuries, life experiences, and knowledge and will match grant recipients to the best possible mentor.
