Shelley Wood

Shelley Wood

Call us biased but we love the work of Shelley Wood, a registered dietitian at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center’s Rehab unit where, among various responsibilities, she works closely with the new spinal cord injury patients that spend their rehab at the unit. We’re biased because she also happen to sit on NorCal SCI’s Advisory Board, providing us with critical experience and insight into the relationship of a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle in the SCI population. On Thurs., Feb. 20th, that’s what she’ll be speaking about as part of the center’s SCI Connections series, open to the public.

In this 30-minute presentation, strategies to maintain and achieve a healthy weight after Spinal Cord Injury will be presented and discussed. Common “fad” diets will also be discussed as well as considerations for those underweight. There will be a 30-minute open forum discussion at the end to ensure your questions are answered.

Shelley received her BS in nutrition with a concentration in dietetics and has also spent time studying implications of poor nutrition on SCI and has made it her focus to work on the prevention of chronic disease in those with SCI through nutrition. She completed her Master’s in Public Health in 2016.

The presentation runs from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and food and beverages will also be served. It will be held at the Valley Specialty Center Basement Conference Room located at 751 S. Bascom Ave. The presentation will also be broadcast on the web. If you’re interested in viewing it, please send an e-mail to Robert Medel at Robert.medel@hhs.sccgov.org so that you can receive web access information.

You should also RSVP to Robert Medel or contact him by phone at (408) 885-2397. This is one of those presentations that you don’t want to miss.
