Pilates was founded on the premise of using movement and exercise to “Return to Life,” which was actually the title of Joseph Pilates' book on his method (originally called Contrology - the study of body control). What better system to use than one that recognizes how exercise not only creates more comfort and function, but encourages a better quality of life? On Thurs., July 23rd at 5:30 p.m. PT, NorCal SCI is pleased to bring back one of the premier Pilates teachers, Stephanie Behrendt Comella, who has worked extensively with those with a spinal cord injury as part of an hour-long class that starts a foundation for those who want to better understand the connection between Pilates and SCI.

Spinal cord injury and paralysis obviously change the way we navigate our lives and Pilates applications are aimed at making this navigation a little bit easier. Pilates is not just an exercise system, it’s a lens to understand movement and body-wide integration for a more efficient way to move through life.

In this class, Stephanie will introduce the Pilates method and how it differs from other movement forms - yoga, meditation, weight training. Specifically, you’ll experience how the Pilates principles of control, concentration, whole-body integration (and more) create more movement, comfort and efficiency after paralyzing injury. Whether you’re a C1 or S1 level injury, Stephanie will share how you can benefit from her teachings.

Stephanie has been working with SCI athletes for almost 10 years, using various movement modalities in her tenure. She has been working with the Pilates method for the last five years and has found this method resonates best with her students’ unique physical and emotional challenges after SCI.

This class is free to attend and is part of “NorCal SCI’s Virtual is the New Reality Series” funded through a Reeve Foundation grant. You must register in advance to attend this class HERE. Once you register, you will immediately receive a confirmation e-mail from us which you should keep for access information to the virtual event.
