Could this new design allow airline passengers to remain in their wheelchairs?
Apparently, we’re not the only ones who think it’s dumb (and dangerous) that 35 years after the passage of the Air Carrier Access Act, wheelchair users are still thrown around like pieces of luggage when we get on a plane. And now, the push to let wheelchair users stay in their wheelchairs while flying is gaining momentum. A global aviation design firm has unveiled a seating system that would let airline passengers to remain in their power wheelchair. The system, called Air 4 All, includes an airline seat that quickly folds out of the way to reveal a track and locking mechanism similar to the docking system used to drive a van from a wheelchair.
Any technology, including this one, will still be years away from receiving regulatory approvals and adoption from airlines but for now, you can learn more about this innovative design and watch a video of how it works HERE.
