BORP-NorCal SCI Adaptive Cycling Sundays: Father with SCI goes adaptive cycling with his kids for first time in 10 years

This past Sunday at Vasona Park & Lake in Los Gatos, we were particularly looking forward to seeing Juan Gomez show up for the BORP-NorCal SCI Adaptive Cycling event we’ve been hosting through the month of May. Juan experienced his spinal cord injury some 10 years ago which was also the last time he had ever ridden a bike, albeit a two-wheel bike back before his injury. And, for the first time in 10 years, Juan spent a good hour hand cycling for the first time ever with his wife, daughter and son (along with other family members) around the lake on a beautiful sunny Sunday. “My daughter and son were so excited to see me bike with them. My daughter had been asking me daily, for several weeks, if I were excited about biking,” shared Juan who couldn’t get the big smile off his face upon completing his day of cycling.

It’s people like Juan that led us to work along with the amazing folks at BORP to bring adaptive cycling to Vasona Park and we have the next two Sundays with a few time slots still left for you to experience adaptive cycling at the park. We also got to meet Benjamin who drove down from San Francisco, Teresa and her mom and brother who traveled from Modesto to experience hand cycling for the first time, too, along with seven others who came down and had a great time cycling with their friends and family members.

Finally, it was also nice to see some other random hand cycling folks show up such as Wojtek and Jason who mingled with everyone and pretty soon, other random wheelchair users showed up to spend a beautiful day among their peers. Camaraderie, that’s what this event is all about and we’d like to invite you to join us by registering for one of the few remaining time slots HERE. And we also encourage you to just come over and hang out with some new people even if you’re not into cycling.
