Univ. of Washington releases two new videos on Heart, Weight and Nutritional Health for those with SCI

Known as a “silent killer”, cardiometabolic disease (which includes obesity, high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and high cholesterol) affects more than a quarter of adults in the United States. We know that people with Spinal Cord Injuries are at a high risk for cardiometabolic disease and that maintaining a healthy heart and weight can come with unique challenges. What everyday choices can someone with SCI make to keep their heart and weight ideal and how can they stick with it? Dr. Nicholas Dabai, DO with the Veterans Association Puget Sound Health Care System, provides an overview of how this disease affects people with SCI. Dr. Dabai discusses the current guidelines for diagnosis, and offers recommendations on ideal nutrition, exercise, and medicine.  

Everyday Advice: A Guide to Heart, Weight, and Nutritional Health
In this discussion, Dr. Katerina Radkevich, MD with the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, explains how she tackles lifestyle changes with her patients and Elaine Stefanowicz shares her journey of using nutrition and exercise to regain control of her diabetes and high cholesterol without the use of medication. They describe the difficulties, successes, and sometimes surprising outcomes of achieving health goals.
