NorCal SCI resumes its rehabilitation center outreach with in-service presentations in Walnut Creek and Chico

It’s been over two years since our last in-service presentation to an SCI rehab staff (thanks to the pandemic) but after the long pause, NorCal SCI co-founder, Nick Struthers, was able to visit John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek followed by a virtual meeting with the staff at Enloe Rehabilitation Center in Chico.

“As I drove up to Walnut Creek to visit the Rehabilitation Unit at John Muir Hospital, I couldn’t believe that it had been almost four years since I last presented to the staff there,” writes Nick. “I met Angela Musiello, the Professional Development Specialist who coordinated my visit at the Rehab Unit and she introduced me to the clinicians who worked directly with SCI patients. It was a pleasure to meet some old friends and be introduced to new ones. I also felt a sense of pride on what NorCal SCI has accomplished since my last visit as our programs and services have continued to expand, making a positive impact on the SCI community.”

We recently learned about Enloe Rehabilitation Center in Chico and our experience through the pandemic allowed us to connect virtually with the clinicians there as a Zoom meeting was much more convenient than making the seven hour round trip to Chico. Brenda Logan, Inpatient Rehab Services Manager, was instrumental in coordinating the virtual meeting and although it will never take the place of an in-person meeting, the feedback on the presentation was very positive.

Overall, this was an incredible opportunity for us to forge new relationships as well as continue to expand existing ones. Our message at every facility is simple: your work is vital in the first phase of the long recovery after a life-altering spinal cord injury and we are here to support you in any way we can so that the patients (and their loved ones) can experience the best possible outcome following discharge from in-patient rehab. We’re grateful to Angela and Brenda for coordinating the meetings and making the connection with the staff in Walnut Creek and Chico.
