A fictional novel about a woman's journey after SCI

Barbara Ridley is a retired nurse practitioner who worked for many years in SCI nursing and ran the Disabled Community Health Clinic at Alta Bates in Berkeley until her retirement in 2015. Since then, she reinvented herself as a fiction writer, and her second novel "Unswerving" is about to be released this month, published by the University of Wisconsin Press.

It is inspired by her clinical experience, and tells the story of Tave, newly injured in a car accident, gradually discovering her inner strength, meeting other characters with disabilities who are leading productive lives, discovering joy in adaptive sports, and finding a new community.  An early draft of the novel was read by NorCal SCI friends Bonnie Lewkowicz and Judy Smith who both provided valuable feedback. The book is dedicated to the volunteers and staff at BORP.
