AbleBodied now out on their own

For the last 3 years, Ablebodied have been providing unique experiences to many in the SCI community by offering free e-assist handcyling lessons giving exposure to what is a game changing technology.

We are delighted to announce AbleBodied have moved out of the NorCal SCI umbrella and are now an official organization in their own right.

We look forward to maintaining our strong partnership with AbleBodied and wish them the very best as they continue to expand their mission.

NorCal SCI Executive Director, Arash Bayatmakou on a lesson with Wojtek

We invited Ablebodied founder and great friend of NorCal SCI Wojtek Poppe to update our community on this exciting transition and he shared the following:

“Able Bodied recently graduated from being a NorCal SCI program to being a fully independent California nonprofit and 501c3. While NorCal SCI is focused on Northern California and survivors of spinal cord injuries, Able Bodied aims to have a global footprint and address any disability that may prevent someone from having “able bodied” experiences. Our mission is to Help people with disabilities around the world connect and experience “able bodied” adventures. Our goal is to make “able bodied” experiences accessible and affordable through education and sharing of resources. Able Bodied Inc. will aim to provide information to an international online community of do-it-yourself (DIY) tinkerers, world travelers, and adventurers that will not let their disability stop them from exploring the world without limits.

So far we have already had successful events, such as handcycling by the ocean in Santa Cruz as well as handcycling in the park with “@BeatTheBias”, a group of young Traumatic Brain Injury survivors. We are currently planning on launching our new Sebastopol location on October 20th (the day after the Kelly Brush annual ride in Mill Valley on the 19th). We will have three off road capable handcycles as well as four freedom Trax provided by Positive Ride. If you are interested in joining us for some BBQ, some “California adventures”, and celebrating our new location, fill out this interest form.

If you cannot make October 20th, you can always book a free lesson at www.ablebodied.org or sign up for our get 1 help 2 program, where we will help you apply for grants and buy your own handcycle if in exchange you promise help two others get their handcycle in the future. We will soon have an AbleBodied ambassador in Modesto and another in San Luis Obispo, so will hopefully be coming to a city near you soon”
