Plan Your Adaptive Summer Activities in the Sierras Now!

As summer approaches and the snow begins to melt, Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra (DSES) is putting away its specialized skis and snowboards and gearing up for a season of biking, paddling, hiking, fishing and more! Situated on the spectacular east side of California’s Sierra Nevada mountains, DSES is a non-profit organization committed to creating inclusive and individualized mountain sports opportunities for people of all ages.

This season, the DSES daily programs include adaptive paddling on alpine lakes, adaptive mountain biking on Mammoth Mountain, and adaptive road cycling around town. With a diverse array of equipment designed to meet various needs and abilities, DSES aims to facilitate outdoor recreation for a broader audience than ever before.

Adventures on the water are facilitated by a fleet of kayaks and stand-up paddleboards equipped with wheelchair mounts and outriggers for added stability, and specialized mats to facilitate wheelchair access to the water's edge.

For the trails and roads, DSES has expanded its collection of adaptive road and mountain bikes to include hand cycles, foot cycles, front-facing bikes, and recumbent ones, many with electric assist. The highly trained staff are well-versed in the local trails and roads, confident that there is a suitable pathway and piece of equipment to ensure a fun and safe experience for everyone.

In addition to daily operations, DSES is hosting several camps for individuals interested in exploring the area or learning a new activity in a group setting. On deck for Summer ’24: an Intro to Adaptive Mountain Biking from July 10-11th; an Advanced Mountain Bike camp from July 12-14th for those with previous experience or their own bike; a Family Camp from July 26-28th, where participants can bring their parents or children to explore all the activities that DSES offers; and a Women's Camp from September 20-22nd.

New to the program this summer is the inaugural DSES Adaptive Mountain Bike Expo! At this one-day event in Mammoth Lakes on July 14th, vendors and retailers will showcase their bikes and equipment to the public, providing the opportunity to try out a variety of adaptive bikes and gear in a fun and inclusive environment. Whether you’re in the market for a new bike, or just want to experience the variety of adaptive gear on the market, mark your calendar for July 14th to be at Shady Rest Park in Mammoth Lakes.
