Finding Freedom on the Water: Adaptive Sailing Clinics and Summer Programs

The Lake Washington Sailing Club (LWSC) is opening the doors to the world of sailing this season with two distinct programs designed specifically for individuals with physical disabilities. Through a partnership with the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF), these initiatives provide the instruction, specialized equipment, and community support needed to master the waves in West Sacramento.

Kickoff Clinics: May 23 & 24

The season begins with the CAF & Lake Washington Adaptive Sailing Clinics. These sessions offer a focused introduction to the sport in a tranquil, inclusive setting. Open to individuals ages 12 and up, the clinics pair participants with experienced instructors who prioritize both empowerment and safety.

Attendees can choose one of the two dates to enjoy a personalized on-the-water experience. It is an ideal way to learn the fundamentals of boat handling while connecting with others in the local adaptive sports community.

  • When: Saturday, May 23 or Sunday, May 24

  • Time: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

  • Where: Lake Washington Sailing Club, West Sacramento, CA

  • Questions: Please reach out to Eva at eva@challengedathletes.org.

Summer Progressive Program: June & July

For those looking to dive deeper into the sport, LWSC is hosting a multi-week progressive program funded by CAF. This program is designed for beginners who want to build their skills over time. Over the course of several weeks, participants will study wind awareness, sailing terminology, and efficient boat handling.

A major highlight of this program is that all participants will receive a free summer membership to the Lake Washington Sailing Club. This allows new sailors to continue practicing their skills and remain active members of the club’s community long after the formal sessions conclude.

Session Dates:

  • Session One: June 1 – June 17

  • Session Two: June 22 – July 8

  • Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

Because each lesson builds on the previous one, participants are encouraged to attend all sessions within their chosen block to gain maximum confidence and proficiency.
