Smart Home Independence Package

The Smart Home Independence Package (SHIP) is designed to provide greater security and independence for people with spinal cord injuries. Launched in January 2021, the program is coordinated by NorCal SCI and offers a customized selection of smart home products installed in the homes of qualified applicants at no cost.

In this video, NorCal SCI co-founder Nick Struthers explains the program and introduces Michael Chavez, the first person to receive a SHIP.

NorCal SCI partners with OnTech for the installations. OnTech’s experienced technicians handle not only the setup but also provide ongoing technical support and expertise, which have been essential to the program’s success.

In this video, NorCal SCI partnered with OnTech to install 10 SHIPs for deserving individuals living in Northern California in 2021.

To qualify, your home must have reliable Wi-Fi, and you (or someone in your household) must have a Google account (such as Gmail) or be willing to create one.
All spinal cord injury levels are eligible, but priority is given to those who would benefit most from the technology and have limited financial resources to purchase the equipment on their own. Applicants must reside in Northern California.
