Debra Dobosz

I am a nurse. In 2011, I finished a Master’s Degree in Nursing Leadership and three months into a new job as a tenure track nursing instructor, a tumor at C4 on my spinal cord was discovered.

Surgery resulted in Brown-Sequard Syndrome where I have full motor function and no sensation on my right side and decreased motor with full sensation on my left side. Two years after surgery I found the job of my dreams working as a clinical instructor and infection control officer for Santa Clara County 911. Throughout these changes I volunteered as a peer mentor for newly injured and attended SCI Community Events. “Hanging with my peeps”, I found the support that healed my adventurous spirit and helped me forward into a rich and rewarding life.

I retired in 2019 and am doing volunteer work with Medical Volunteers for Disaster Relief. We kept busy during Covid doing vaccination clinics

At 67, the next item on my bucket list is experiencing the Northern Lights and sail on the Arctic Ocean. I promise a wave and a shout out to Valley Med Rehab, NorCal SCI and all the wonderful people who came into my life as a result of my surgery.
