When life changes in an instant, the path forward requires an immense amount of resilience, adaptation, and, above all, patience. For 53-year-old Jeffrey Whitaker, that turning point occurred on a dark, rainy night on January 14, 2023. While driving to an extra night shift as a nurse, Jeffrey was hit by a drunk driver just a mile away from his home.

Following his initial acute care, Jeffrey transferred to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for specialized rehabilitation. It was there, through the Newly Injured Resource Kit, that he first discovered NorCal SCI. Today, Jeffrey utilizes our peer counseling networks, social gatherings, and grants to support his ongoing journey toward independence.

Arash’s world changed in 2012 when he suffered a cervical spinal cord injury. Faced with a healthcare system that offered very little support, he decided to ignore the negative medical outlook and pave his own path to recovery. His determination eventually led to a TEDx talk, a published memoir, and a standup comedy fundraiser. He joined the NorCal SCI Board in 2019 and became Executive Director in 2023. Today, this Bay Area native and busy dad of two balances his collaborative leadership style with a passion for family, cooking, and the great outdoors. I sat down with Arash to look past the official resume and find out what truly keeps him motivated every single day.
