IN SEARCH OF SCI CURE: Japan moves forward with first treatment plan
Japanese researchers at Keio University have taken the bold step of announcing a treatment plan for spinal cord injury using induced pluripotent stem cells. The treatment would initially apply to the newly-injured with the neural stem cells injected within four weeks following injury to encourage nerve regeneration.
Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells (iPS) are derived from skin or blood cells that have been reprogrammed back into an embryonic-like pluripotent state that enables the development of an unlimited source of any type of human cell needed for therapeutic purposes.
