With years of experience working with the spinal cord injury population, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Shelley Wood, will tackle the misunderstood “Role of Fruits and Supplements in a Spinal Cord Injured Body” during a virtual presentation on Thurs., Dec. 17th at 5 p.m. PST. While most fruit is low in starch, they could be high in sugar and carbs. However, attempting to replace their nutritional value with supplements is where it starts to get tricky and Shelley plans on explaining how to keep the use of supplements to a minimum while introducing the right fruits to your diet. You may register for this presentation HERE.

She will also take a deep dive to help unravel the relationship between carbohydrates and fruits — yes, there are varying levels of carbohydrates in fruit — and will discuss how much is too much, how much is too little while also addressing how it supports your fiber consumption. Additionally, she’ll go in depth on the role of supplements and how you can gain the same benefits, if not more, that supplements portray to deliver from fruits.

Her presentation is part of the “NorCal SCI Presents: Virtual is the New Reality Series” funded through a grant by the Reeve Foundation and you must register in advance to attend. Once you register, you will immediately receive a confirmation e-mail from us which you should keep for access information to the virtual event.

Shelley is a lifelong advocate of nutrition. When she isn’t working with her patients, she can be found in her greenhouse or kitchen. She obtained her B.S. in Nutritional Science from San Jose State University in 2012 and has been working at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, one of the top spinal cord injury rehabilitation hospitals in the country, since 2013.  She currently works in the outpatient clinic of the hospital seeing primarily those with SCI and also spends time working with complex GI issues in the outpatient gastroenterology clinic.
