50% of SCI community obese: How to Eat for a Healthy Weight and a Healthy Life

It should come as no surprise that 50% of those with a spinal cord injury are categorized as obese, this compared to 42.4% nationally as recorded in 2018. And so, the Feb. 20th SCI Connections presentation on “Eating for a Healthy Weight and a Healthy Life“ by registered dietitian, Shelley Wood, was a sobering reminder of the vulnerability of the SCI population to cardiovascular disease (a result of obesity), the number one cause of death among those with SCI. But lifestyle changes can help improve your odds dramatically and that was the purpose of this 90-minute presentation.

Shelley provided a lot of solid ideas and approaches for those who may be underweight or overweight. As someone who works with both the inpatient and outpatient SCI population at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, she is uniquely qualified to speak on this matter and has dedicated herself to this cause through her education, teachings and daily work.

We strongly encourage you to invest the 90-minutes to watch her presentation HERE.
