NorCal SCI mobilizes virtual inpatient support groups at area hospitals

Ever since the statewide shelter in place orders took effect last month, every single hospital began restricting access to all visitors to their facilities. This included any inpatient peer support programs run at the various spinal cord injury rehabilitation centers that made such programs available to the newly-injured persons. The combination of no loved ones or peer supporters able to visit the patients was a big blow to an essential part of each patient’s recovery process since these individuals were effectively cut off from the outside world while depriving them from a chance to learn from those who have successfully managed a life with SCI before getting discharged.

NorCal SCI is proud to announce of agreements with three Bay Area SCI Rehab Centers to offer Virtual Peer Support meetings on a weekly basis. The three centers are Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, Alta Bates Summit Medical Center in Oakland and California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) Davies Campus in San Francisco who have taken action to re-institute peer support programs for their newly-injured SCI patients.

We’re also grateful to a dedicated group of volunteer peer supporters who have agreed to take part in these programs as long as necessary. We’re continuing our efforts to engage other remaining SCI Rehab Hospitals so we can offer similar programs to their respective center.
