The California LifeLine Program (California Lifeline) is a state program that provides discounted home phone and cell phone services to eligible households and by discounted, we mean free. Is there a catch? Sure: you or another person in your household must be enrolled in any one of the various public assistance programs such as SSI, Medi-Cal, and SNAP just to name a few. But once you are declared eligible, you’ll get a FREE Android 4G LTE smartphone with a FREE monthly service plan offered through the T-Mobile network.

The program is offered through phone companies as well as various organizations including Your Call Wireless and Assurance Wireless, just to name a few. It is a government benefit program supported by the federal Universal Service Fund. If you prefer a particular phone company, do a search of their name+LifeLine program for details.
