BORP – NorCal SCI collaboration to bring Adaptive Cycling to Vasona Park April 25-May 30
In their first collaboration ever, Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) and NorCal SCI will launch a six-week Adaptive Cycling program for the spinal cord injury community managed by BORP’s experienced cycling staff. From Noon to 3 p.m. on six consecutive Sundays starting April 25th and concluding May 30th, individuals with spinal cord injuries/disorders can experience the joys of cycling at the beautiful Vasona Park and Lake in Los Gatos.
For many months, BORP’s Adaptive Cycling Program Manager, Leo Siecienski, and NorCal SCI co-founder, Franklin Elieh, have been working together to bring this program to reality. Thanks to the Craig H. Neilsen and the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundations, which are supporting this program, the spinal cord injury community in the South Bay will have easy access to try out adaptive cycling.
“As much as I love the BORP adaptive cycling program up in Berkeley, I found it difficult to drive 60 miles each way to enjoy the benefits of that great program and I heard that from many others as well,” says Franklin. “The response and feedback to this limited-run program will help us determine the level of interest and enthusiasm for adaptive cycling in the South Bay and to what extent NorCal SCI should invest in a similar program on an ongoing basis not only in this region but also other under-served SCI population centers.”
Says BORP’s Cycling Manager, Leo, “I plan on being at Vasona each of these Sundays, along with a volunteer and another BORP staff member. We’ll work with NorCal SCI’s volunteers to serve up to 10 participants each day. We plan on bringing a variety of nine adaptive cycles along with all the gear needed to safely and comfortably set folks up on the bikes so they can enjoy the trails of Vasona Park for up to an hour.”
The official instructions on how to sign up will be announced by NorCal SCI on Tuesday, March 30th, so check back here on that day.
