Two Bay Area-based movement teachers with SCI expertise open new studios
We have come to know Raye Kahn and Stephanie Comella, two highly-experienced, talented and devoted movement teachers, very closely over the past 18 months, especially since they led over two dozen virtual classes for NorCal SCI between July of 2020 and just a couple of months ago. Through their respective practices, they have developed innovative approaches for those with a spinal cord injury and now we’re happy to share the news with the SCI community that both Raye and Stephanie have just opened their respective studios for in-person sessions. We’d like to re-introduce them and share with you the location of their practice.
Raye Kahn (they/them) is a movement teacher specializing in working with people who have spinal cord injuries and other neurological disabilities and has been teaching people how to move since 2008. Raye is excited to announce they have officially moved their new Pilates equipment into BORP's (Bay Area Outreach and Recreation Program) fitness studio at the Ed Roberts Campus in Berkeley with over 800 square feet of space. This studio is now equipped with a Pilates trapeze table, a Pilates reformer, a springboard, stationary hand bike, adaptive rowing machine, and much more. Raye offers private and small group sessions to people of all abilities. Check out their website HERE, learn about their method HERE, or schedule your first session or a free 20-minute consultation HERE. The fitness studio is located at 3075 Adeline St., across from the Ashby BART Station. Get in touch with Raye, sign up for their newsletter HERE to stay up to date on their offerings, and come check out the new space.
The Stephanie Comella Movement Coaching studio is located at 2930 Camino Diablo, Suite 100B in Walnut Creek. With over 10 years of experience in SCI recovery, she has curated a multiple-systems approach for movement re-discovery after paralyzing injury. With heavy inspiration from Pilates (and with the support of Pilates equipment), you’ll experience your body’s abilities in a whole new way. Exercises are practiced in a specific progression which allows the body to build foundational skills and build strength, from the ground up. Stephanie emphasizes movement education, body awareness and ownership for better retention and confidence practicing exercises at home. She has found this approach builds movement confidence and self-efficacy, which ultimately leads to healthier and more sustainable recovery programs for any recovery goal. You can check out her website HERE and can be reached via e-mail at stephcomella@gmail.com.
