Though we showed a sneak preview video about our latest initiative, the Smart Home Independence Package (SHIP), at our fundraising event last October, we’re now ready to officially take the wraps off of this program. It is a small step in our continuing effort to enhance the safety and independence of those with a spinal cord injury by featuring a customized range of Google Nest products that will be installed in the homes of 10 qualifying applicants with SCI in 2021. Though all SCI levels will be considered, priority will be given to those who would benefit the most from the package and have limited financial means to fund the equipment themselves. The Google Nest range of products

This program represents an effort we began nearly two years ago when we introduced members of the SCI community to the benefits of using Smart Home technologies such as Amazon Echo Dot and Google Home Mini assistants as well as smart plugs and bulbs. We have shipped 85 of these devices since then and with today’s announcement, it marks the next steps in our continuing effort to demonstrate how technology can improve the lives of those living with paralysis.

We tested our first installment of SHIP at the home of Michael Chavez, a quadriplegic living along with his mother at their home in San Jose. Using the Google Nest range of products, we installed Smart Locks, a Nest Camera and a thermostat along with the Google Home System empowering Michael to control various functions in and around his home. But we think Michael best describes what this technology has meant to him: “Whether I am in my chair or bed, I now feel safe and secure at home on my own. I can see who is at the door, unlock the door for them to come in or give them specific instructions about leaving a package. I am also able to control the temperature of the house using my voice, whether I am here or while I am out on the road. I now even have a lock to my own room which gives me privacy. My mom also feels more comfortable when she goes out. The Nest products have certainly been a game changer for me and my family by enhancing my security, privacy and independence.”
