The Annual Spinal Cord Injury/Disorder (SCI/D) Wellness clinics at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC) are back and if you are a patient who was admitted and discharged from the Acute Rehabilitation unit at ABSMC with an SCI/D, you could be eligible for this program offered. Participants will have back-to-back visits on a single day with a team of healthcare professionals with knowledge and experience working with SCI/D, including a physician and/or nurse practitioner, a physical therapist, an occupational therapist and a medical social worker.

The ultimate goal of the SCI/D Wellness clinic is to lengthen and improve the lives of people living with SCI/D by addressing typical health challenges which are known through scientific research and clinical experience to cause the greatest disease in people living with SCI/D. Bowel and bladder, prevention or healing of pressure wounds, respiratory health, wheelchair seating, spasticity, sexual health, vocation and recreation are some of the topics which may be addressed during the annual wellness visits.

In addition to the wellness assessments, time for relaxation, refreshments and socialization is also fostered during the clinic day. At the close of the annual wellness visit, patients and their support-persons will receive “After Visit Instructions” from their ABSMC SCI/D healthcare team, with all the recommendations and/or referrals clearly described.   If you think you qualify to be a part of the Annual SCI/D Wellness Clinics, or for more information about the Disabled Community Health Clinic at the Herrick Campus of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, please call (510) 204-4738.
