Part 2: Back and Hip Self-Release Techniques for those with SCI coming June 17

For those full-time wheelchair users, specific areas of the back and hips become the most restricted and compressed from sitting in a wheelchair all day long, becoming the hot spots for those with a spinal cord injury. Following her first presentation on May 13th, which focused on neck and shoulder self-release techniques, strength and conditioning trainer, Rachel Kahn, is back on Thurs., June 17th at 5 p.m. PT to take you through a full upper, middle, and lower back release as well as a release for the front of the hip to help decompress and lengthen the most restricted areas. You can register for this workshop free HERE.

Rachel will also look at how this restriction can affect other areas of the body (like your organs, diaphragm and neck) and also give you a couple of hip stretches you can perform in bed or on the floor that are a great way to start or end your day.

Class prep: This class will be a combination of lecture and hands-on self-release techniques. Come prepared with a thick rolled up pair of socks (a tennis ball may also work), and a bolster or half-foam roller (pillows will work also). You can either remain seated or transfer to a bed/floor space as Rachel will be demonstrating most of these release techniques on the floor on her stomach and back. You may also want someone assisting you to change positions while on the bed/floor space..

This workshop is part of the “NorCal SCI Presents: Virtual is the New Reality Series”. Once you register, you will immediately receive a confirmation e-mail from us which you should keep for access information to the virtual event. Rachel is a Nationally Certified Pilates Teacher, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and is currently pursuing her license for massage therapy.
