Understanding bone loss after a spinal cord injury

Low bone density occurs when the body loses too much bone, resulting in weak bones that are easier to break. Bone loss can occur immediately after spinal cord injury (SCI), typically as early as six weeks after the injury and can continue rapidly for several years after the injury. The medical term for low bone density is osteoporosis and there is a great deal of misinformation on what exactly causes it and novel treatments available to address it but you can learn most everything you need to know about this secondary condition post-SCI in this great article produced by the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems HERE.
