Community Outing at SF Giants & Armando’s Wheelchair Basketball Feature Story

At the Giants game, May 23rd

NorCal SCI volunteer Armando Rodriguez has been increasing his presence – and his impact – in the local SCI community, and we as an organization couldn’t be happier for him.

He was recently featured in the SF Standard because of his dedication and passion for wheelchair basketball, an activity he continues to participate in both as an athlete and a coach. (If you haven’t already, definitely read the story!)

Last September, Armando started a new support group for Men with SCI which started with monthly virtual meetings on zoom. The group hosted its first in-person gathering in December, getting a huge turnout and ending the year strong. After that, Armando stated he wanted the group to continue with a hybrid format and to have at least one quarterly in-person meeting.

In addition to a meetup on April 4th at SCI FIT Dublin, Armando got the group (and their family members) back together for a SF Giants game on Saturday, May 23rd. NorCal SCI and Life Goes on Foundation sponsored and supported the event, Armando hosted a tailgate and cooked up a feast (burgers, hot links, and potato salad) for everyone to enjoy, and the group had a great time hanging out, cracking jokes, giving each other advice, and soaking up the sunshine.

From Armando:

“The outing was a huge success. The game was electric as the Giants hit a grand slam to help them win. I’m so proud of the event and thankful for everyone who showed up. Looking forward to making more memories with this group in the future.”

We are so proud and grateful to have Armando in our community. Keep your eye out in our newsletter for future events and opportunities, and on our calendar for the next virtual meeting of the support group.
