Spotlighting BORP: The Bay Area’s Hub for Adaptive Sports and Outdoor Adventure

When navigating a spinal cord injury or mobility disability, finding accessible ways to stay active, get outdoors, and connect with a community can feel daunting. While many fitness spaces claim to be inclusive, true accessibility requires specialized equipment, expertise, and a culture built from the ground up.

That is exactly what the Bay Area Outreach & Recreation Program (BORP) provides. Founded in 1975 by individuals with disabilities, this Berkeley-based non-profit has spent over 50 years working to improve the health, independence, and social integration of youth and adults with physical disabilities and visual impairments.

Here is a closer look at who they are, the incredible programs they offer, and how community members can get involved.

What BORP Offers

BORP hosts one of the most comprehensive lineups of adaptive sports and recreational activities in the country, catering to both competitive athletes and casual outdoor enthusiasts.

  • The Adaptive Cycling Center: Located in Berkeley, this center houses one of the largest collections of adaptive bikes in the world. The fleet includes handcycles, recumbent bikes, side-by-side tandems, and three-wheelers, allowing cyclists of all ability levels to explore local Bay Area trails.

  • Team Sports: For those seeking competitive or recreational team dynamics, BORP offers power soccer (designed specifically for power wheelchair users), wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, goalball, and sled hockey. Programs are split into youth (ages 5–19) and adult divisions.

  • Adventures & Outings: This program coordinates group trips that make the natural beauty of California accessible. Activities include kayaking, guided nature hikes on accessible trails, urban excursions to museums and theaters, and even adaptive skiing trips.

  • Fitness & Fitness Center: BORP provides virtual and live group fitness classes tailored to different mobility levels, alongside an open gym in Berkeley equipped with specialized machinery like stationary handcycles, rowing machines, and VitaGlides.

  • Access California: A digital resource providing highly detailed accessibility information on outdoor destinations across the state, helping individuals plan independent trips with confidence.

The Cost of Participation

BORP utilizes a structured participant membership model designed to streamline registration while keeping activities economically feasible to the community.

Annual Membership - $240/year ($20/month). Covers unlimited access to almost all virtual and in-person programs.

Monthly Membership - $25/month. Full program access on a month-to-month basis.

Day Pass - $13/day. Perfect for trying out a specific class or single-day event.

Family / Friends / PCA - $0 to sliding scale. Encourages personal care attendants and loved ones to participate together.

While the true cost to run these programs averages about $1,500 per participant annually, BORP covers the gap through fundraising. No one is ever turned away for a lack of funds. Full scholarships are readily available for anyone on a fixed income, receiving government assistance, or experiencing financial hardship.

Free Community Events

In addition to their standard membership programs, BORP regularly hosts free public events that are open to all ages, disabilities, and experience levels with no membership required.

For example, during the summer, they offer free drop-in wheelchair basketball sessions in partnership with local parks and recreation departments. These weekly pickup games and skill clinics provide an excellent opportunity to get out on the court, try out adaptive equipment, and meet the community in a relaxed environment. Additionally, BORP often partners with local organizations to host adaptive sports fairs, community days, and outdoor festivals that are completely free to attend.

Whether you are looking to join a competitive sports team, rent an adaptive bicycle for a weekend ride, or find events that do not require a membership, BORP provides the equipment, training, and community to make it happen.
