Empowering Health: Breast Cancer Awareness for the SCI/D Community

Breast cancer awareness matters for everyone, but for people with SCI/D, unique challenges make early detection and prevention especially important. Mobility issues, reduced sensation, or trouble accessing standard screening facilities can make breast exams and mammograms harder to get. Yet, the risk of breast cancer is just as real for those with SCI as for others. Women with SCI are about 40% less likely to have had a recent mammogram compared to women without SCI, according to the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine (2024).

Empowering people with SCI with knowledge and resources is key to overcoming these barriers. Simple steps like learning self-breast exams, adapted for sensory or mobility challenges, can be guided by groups like the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Connecting with SCI support groups or health programs can offer tips on finding accessible screenings and navigating insurance. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let’s find new ways to ensure the SCI community has the tools to prioritize breast health!
