Glide Onto the Bay: Join NorCal SCI for a Free Accessible Kayaking Adventure in Sausalito
Picture yourself paddling through calm waters, feeling the ocean breeze, and taking in stunning views of the San Francisco skyline. On Sunday, August 30th, NorCal SCI is partnering with Environmental Traveling Companions (ETC) to host a free, fully accessible sea kayaking day out of Sausalito. From 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM, participants can get out on the water, connect with the community, and enjoy a complimentary lunch.
This adventure is made possible by the adaptive outdoor pioneers at ETC. Founded in 1972, ETC began by offering whitewater rafting trips to people with disabilities. In 1984, they expanded to the coast, launching their accessible sea kayaking program right out of the Sausalito waterfront. Over the last five decades, ETC has welcomed thousands of participants on outdoor excursions, establishing themselves as a premier leader in adaptive recreation.
The launch site itself, Schoonmaker Point Marina, carries its own piece of Bay Area history. The peninsula was originally built during Sausalito's famous World War II shipbuilding days, when the adjacent local shipyards were humming with the construction of Liberty ships. Today, it is a harbor featuring a flat, easily accessible sandy beach and calm, protected deep-water berths. This unique layout makes it the ideal, safe place for kayakers of all experience and physical ability levels to launch into the Bay.
The trip is completely free and open to individuals with spinal cord injuries, along with their caregivers and family members (ages 10 and older). To ensure as many people can participate as possible, registration is limited to a maximum of four people per group, and each group must include at least one individual with a spinal cord injury.
No prior paddling experience is necessary. ETC's trained, enthusiastic guides will provide all the gear, training, and customized adaptive support needed to ensure a safe and comfortable day on the water.
