NorCal SCI is No Longer a United Spinal Chapter

NorCal SCI, along with all the other affiliate chapters in the western United States region, has officially disengaged from The United Spinal Association and are no longer affiliate chapters. The decision was unanimous among the West Coast SCI Organizations who believed that their respective SCI communities would be better served with this change.

NorCal SCI has teamed up with Triumph Foundation, Spinal Network, The Here and Now Project, Oregon Spinal and Nevada SCI to establish The West Coast SCI Alliance. Our first engagements have been very productive in sharing ideas and best practices to better develop our respective organizations and better serve our community.

NorCal SCI will continue to collaborate with all organizations (including United Spinal) that support the SCI cause and remain open to opportunities that will help develop the organization and better support individuals with SCI and their family members with SCI in Northern California.

As a fledgling organization, in 2017 NorCal SCI became the Silicon Valley Chapter of United Spinal which gave them credibility and even allowed them to accept tax deductible donations via United Spinal as we had not yet established 501c3 status. At the time, United Spinal had a strong chapter engagement team and there were many initial benefits to NorCal SCI at the beginning. We quickly grew our experience and expertise and soon were no longer reliant on United Spinal.

Over the years, subsequent leadership changes and organizational focus of United Spinal motivated the west coast organizations’ decision.

If you are already a United Spinal Member, this change will have no impact on your membership other than you will no longer be associated with a chapter on the West Coast. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions regarding this change by emailing info@norcalsci.org and they would be happy to speak to you further.
