Wheelchair Skills Research Study: Get Paid to Learn New Skills!

What if a few virtual sessions could transform the way you navigate curbs, doors, and stairs in your manual wheelchair? This groundbreaking study through University of Pittsburgh evaluates whether peer-led online coaching can sharpen essential skills for everyday independence—without leaving home. Six targeted 1:1 sessions, led by an experienced wheelchair user may lead to measurable gains in your confidence and ability!

Participants train remotely via Microsoft Teams or Zoom, selecting at least five skills from a proven list that includes high curbs, steep inclines, wheelies, and transfers. Progress is tracked through online questionnaires, and you will be compensated for your time. The major requirements are:

  • At least 18 years old

  • Non-progressive spinal cord injury

  • Use a manual wheelchair for at least 50% of mobility

  • Live in the community (not hospital, rehab, or long-term care)

  • Access to an internet-enabled device with video capability

  • Access to a spotter for skill practice

  • Desire training in at least 5 specified wheelchair skills (see flyer for details)
