Worthy accomplishments: CIL presents Ed Roberts awards at Jan. 23 ceremony

RJ Mitte and Franklin

What a great evening it was to be reminded of those individuals with disabilities, as well as those supporting them, of the incredible feats they have achieved and NorCal SCI co-founders, Nick and Franklin, were grateful to the Center for Independent Living’s Executive Director, Stuart James, who graciously invited us to attend the Fourth Annual Ed Roberts Awards on Thurs., Jan. 23rd at the UC Theatre in Berkeley. There were five honorees that were bestowed the famous artichoke-shaped trophy for their contribution and advocacy work in support of the disability community.

We managed to rub elbows with some stars, including AMC TV series Breaking Bad’s RJ Mitte who has cerebral palsy, Zack Gottsagen, an actor with Down Syndrome who just starred in The Peanut Butter Falcon alongside of Shia LeBeouf, actress and singer Ali Stroker (not present), acclaimed fashion designer for individuals with disabilities Stephanie Thomas, and long-time CIL supporter Jim Fousekis.

The evening was attended by an estimated 200 people and featured a passionate group of supporters of the disability community. The honorees couldn’t have been more deserving of the coveted award and we’re honored to be there and share a rewarding and inspiring evening.
