NorCal SCI launches its free Virtual SCI Consultation on Oct. 23
When you have a spinal cord injury and live away from major metropolitan areas, having reasonable access to medical professionals with SCI-related experience is not quite easy. It’s the reason we introduced our Mobile Clinics in 2018 but COVID-19 forced us to re-adjust those clinics from an in-person experience to a virtual one which we tested out earlier this year. Based on the success of that model, we decided to extend offering a Virtual SCI Consultation on Fri., Oct. 23rd from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to those living with SCI in Northern California.
We’re thrilled that our consultation team conducting these sessions will once again offer their assessment and recommendations to those who participate. We have a Nurse Practitioner, an Occupational Therapist, a Dietitian and a Physical Therapist who specialize in Spinal Cord Injury medicine. The Nurse Practitioner (Rebecca Hummel-Moore) specializes in spasticity and is knowledgeable in skin care and bowel and bladder care while the OT (Carole Adler Hughes) and the PT (Kyle Smith) have between them many decades of experience treating individuals specifically with SCI/D. The Registered Dietitian (Shelley Wood) works directly with the SCI community both in acute rehab and in the community.
The consultation will involve a 30-minute Zoom session with the team and any recommendations will be communicated electronically after the consultation. Appointment times will be scheduled between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m and will last approximately 30 minutes.
We will expect the participants to be able to use Zoom and be able to control the device and camera or have a caregiver or family member present to assist with using the device and camera. This is important as this will allow our team to view such things as type of wheelchair used, seating position and assess range of motion and other requirements.
We encourage you to sign up HERE immediately as appointment slots will be limited.
