Removing Barriers at Home: Meet Theodoor, the Automatic Door Opener

For many people living with a spinal cord injury, getting through a standard door is a daily hassle. Most of us do not actually have automatic door openers at home; instead, we just struggle through the process, wrestling with heavy doors or tight angles every time we move between rooms. Traditional automatic systems rarely feel like an option, as they usually demand expensive installation, complex wiring, or permanent damage to walls and doorframes.

A company called Doorbotics is aiming to change that with Theodoor—a compact automatic door opener designed specifically for residential swing doors.

The system handles the entire process for you: it automatically unlatches, opens, and closes the door. Installation is quick and simple, plugging directly into a standard wall outlet without requiring any drilling, rewiring, or permanent modifications to your home.

You can control Theodoor in a few different ways depending on your setup:

  • Bluetooth Key Fob: Open and close the door with a simple button press, no internet required.

  • Theodoor App: Operate the door right from your smartphone without needing a Wi-Fi connection.

  • Smart Home Integration: Connect the device to Wi-Fi to enable hands-free voice control using Amazon Alexa.

Theodoor is not available for general public purchase quite yet because Doorbotics is running limited early-access pilot programs to test the device in real homes. Joining their waitlist helps the team gather feedback, refine the product, and match devices with wheelchair users, caregivers, and assistive technology partners who need them most.
