NorCal SCI Connects with Community at Local Wellness and Awareness Events

NorCal SCI Board Member Dan Scrivner recently represented the organization at two significant community gatherings, where he had the opportunity to connect with veterans, healthcare professionals, and grant recipients. These events served as a fantastic platform to share resources and celebrate the advancements in health and mobility for the spinal cord injury community.

SCIFIT 2nd Annual Wellness Event

On April 25, SCIFIT hosted its 2nd Annual Wellness Event, bringing together a variety of vendors and organizations focused on health and mobility. With live music and great food providing a welcoming backdrop, the day was as enjoyable as it was informative.

The event featured Kerry Peterson, who led two engaging panel discussions: “Newly Injured” and “Life After Paralysis.” Additionally, Nikki Walsh led adaptive workout sessions, offering participants hands-on opportunities to stay active.

A major highlight for the NorCal SCI team was the chance for Dan to meet seven recent grant recipients in person. These individuals were awarded support through the Newly Injured Grant and The Franklin Project: Bay Area to attend SCIFIT Dublin. Seeing the impact of these programs firsthand reinforces the importance of community support, and NorCal SCI looks forward to participating again next year. VA Palo Alto SCI/D Awareness Fair

On April 30, the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and the SCI/D Center at the VA Palo Alto Health Care System held their SCI/D Awareness Fair. The theme this year, “Whole Health – Through Innovation and Recreation,” emphasized the vital role of technology and activity in long-term wellness.

This event marked the first in-person awareness fair since the pandemic, bringing together veterans, VA staff, and vendors. Attendees explored interactive exhibits and demonstrations featuring accessible vans, wheelchairs, hand cycles, and cutting-edge exoskeleton technology.

During the fair, Dan met with veterans and staff to share information regarding the various resources, programs, and grants NorCal SCI provides. It was an excellent day of education and outreach, ensuring that those who have served have access to the tools they need to thrive.
