The Sisterhood of Wellness: Mastering Preventative Care After SCI

This one is for the ladies.

Let’s be honest—navigating the healthcare system as a woman is already a marathon. When you add a spinal cord injury to the mix, it can feel like that marathon is entirely uphill. We all know the drill: the daily focus is usually on managing our injury, but our long-term vitality depends on staying ahead of the general health milestones that often get overlooked. On Thursday, May 14th, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm, Oregon Spinal Cord Injury Connections is bringing us together to change that narrative and put the power back in our own hands.

This session is designed by women who understand the unique logistical hurdles we face. We’re moving beyond the basics to tackle the "how-to" of preventative care that actually works for our bodies. We’ll be sharing real-talk strategies for navigating mammograms and breast health—including how to handle equipment that wasn't exactly built with us in mind—and discussing how SCI impacts things like cholesterol and heart health. It’s about more than just a check-up; it’s about ensuring our preventative roadmap is as comprehensive and accessible as possible.

The most important tool we have is each other. This forum is a space to learn how to advocate for ourselves in standard clinical settings and to make sure our doctors see the whole woman, not just the injury. From bone density scans to routine blood work, we are building a foundation for independence together. It is time to stop reacting to health issues and start proactively protecting the vibrant lives we’ve worked so hard to build.
