Two important events of interest to the SCI community being held in San Jose this week
There are two highly-informative and compelling events being held in San Jose this week that you should strongly consider attending if you are part of the SCI community.
The relationship of a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle in the SCI population: Thurs., Feb. 20th
This topic is one of the toughest parts of living with a spinal cord injury and Shelley Wood, the registered dietitian at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, has developed a ton of experience in this area. Getting the right types of food groups into your body is a major challenge but Shelley has developed many plans that would allow even those with a discriminating palate to enjoy a healthy diet and, more importantly, a healthy lifestyle.
About Us: A special reading of NY Times personal essays of persons with disabilities: Sun., Feb. 23rd
Hicklebee's Bookstore in San Jose will host a special presentation of About Us, a book containing a compilation of personal essays from the New York Times written by people with varying disabilities, from spinal cord injury, stroke, Parkinson's Disease, cancer, and others. The book includes a number of essays about living with spinal cord injury, including one titled, "I Use a Wheelchair. And Yes, I'm Your Doctor".
The authors, including East Bay resident and quadriplegic artist and innovator Elizabeth Jameson, along with Catherine Kudlick and other authors, share — some with humor — their wisdom, perseverance, sorrow and frustrations.
